This is a 19th Century French Gilt Steel / Brass Cuirassier Buckle Plate, possibly an Engineer officer's belt buckle
 
The rectangular, die-pressed plate has a raised design depicting a Cuirassier helmet and breastplate It is believed to be from the period circa 1870-1914.
 
Measurements: 2.5" inches tall 2.5" inches wide
